Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of its premium motor spirit (PMS) in New York, United States. The shipment, organized by Sunoco and Vitol, was delivered on the tanker *Gemini Pearl*, marking the first time the refinery’s product has entered the U.S. market. The 650,000‑barrel‑per‑day facility in Ibeju‑Lekki has been attracting attention since its inception, and Reuters reports that another shipment of Dangote petrol—sold to Shell by Glencore—is scheduled to arrive in New York on September 19. These deliveries represent a major breakthrough for the $20 billion refinery, solidifying its position as a key player in the global fuel market.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Refinery, announced that the plant has exported 1.1 billion liters of petrol in just three months. He emphasized that the refinery’s primary goal is to make Nigeria a net exporter of fuel, ending the era of petrol queues that has plagued the country since 1975. “We have been battling fuel queues since 1975, but today Nigerians are witnessing a new era,” Dangote said.
The refinery’s success is a significant development for Nigeria’s economy, as it aims to reduce the nation’s reliance on fuel imports. With a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the plant is poised to meet domestic demand and potentially export surplus products to other markets. This achievement underscores Nigeria’s growing presence in the global energy sector and is expected to have a lasting impact in the coming months.
As the refinery continues to expand its reach, industry experts will closely watch the upcoming shipment of Dangote petrol to New York to assess how the product performs in the U.S. market. With its substantial production capacity and increasing exports, the Dangote Refinery is set to play a major role in shaping the future of the global energy sector.
