Rivers Governor To Have Zero Powers After Suspension

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole, has expressed concerns about the current situation of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who was recently suspended by President Bola Tinubu. According to Cole, even when Fubara’s suspension is lifted, he will have limited authority as governor.

Speaking on a television program, Cole stated that Fubara will face significant challenges in making decisions without external interference. He emphasized that Rivers State, being a crucial part of Nigeria, deserves a governor with full authority to lead. Cole, who was a governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, noted that the people of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole will be affected by the situation.

The APC chieftain explained that the dynamics of Nigerian politics often involve outgoing governors handing over power to their preferred successors, but this can lead to conflicts between the old and new administrations. He cited examples of such conflicts hindering democracy and negatively impacting the people. Cole advised Fubara to negotiate with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to establish a mutually acceptable agreement that would allow the governor to make certain decisions independently.

The situation in Rivers State has sparked concerns about the balance of power and the ability of elected officials to govern effectively. As the state awaits the outcome of Fubara’s suspension, Cole’s comments highlight the need for a resolution that will enable the governor to exercise his authority and make decisions in the best interest of the people. The development has significant implications for the state and the country, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold.
