Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has pledged to pursue inclusive governance and reconciliation as he resumes office following the lifting of the six‑month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu. The emergency, declared on 18 March, responded to intense political crises that threatened peace, governance and stability in the state. In a statewide broadcast, Governor Fubara described the period as challenging but necessary to restore order and safeguard democratic institutions. He chose to cooperate with President Tinubu and the National Assembly, prioritising peace over personal or political gain, and resisted pressure to contest the constitutionality of the emergency declaration and the suspension of democratic structures.
After President Tinubu brokered peace among the contending parties, Governor Fubara, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State House of Assembly agreed to set aside their differences. The governor noted that reconciliation serves the best interests of the people of Rivers State and will facilitate progress. He emphasized that the responsibility now rests on the government, the state assembly, political leaders and stakeholders to work for the common good. Expressing optimism that peace and reconciliation will become permanent, he highlighted the importance of collective responsibility and a commitment to unity. While acknowledging concerns about the peace process, he assured residents that inclusiveness will remain a priority.
Despite the political turbulence, the governor’s administration has achieved significant milestones in infrastructure, education, health and other sectors over the past two years. Governor Fubara pledged to focus on completing ongoing projects, reviving the state’s economy, protecting lives and property, and improving the welfare of the people. He thanked citizens for their resilience and patience during the emergency period and called on all to unite in rebuilding the state. He also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, Minister Wike and other stakeholders for their role in restoring peace, urging citizens to work together toward a stronger, more prosperous and peaceful Rivers State.
The lifting of the emergency rule and the governor’s pledge for inclusive governance and reconciliation mark a significant step toward restoring stability and promoting development in Rivers State. As the state moves forward, the focus will be on completing ongoing projects, improving the economy and enhancing the welfare of the people. The governor’s commitment to reconciliation and inclusive governance is expected to usher in a fresh beginning, with all stakeholders collaborating to achieve a brighter future.
