The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stipulated conditions for the reintegration of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, the leaders of the interim leadership, into the party. Abimiku Monday, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication to acting National Chairman Nafiu Bala, explained that Mark and Aregbesola must follow the legal process of joining the party through the electoral wards and align themselves with the existing ADC structure. Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Monday emphasized that the party is open to aligning with the Mark‑led leadership, but only if they adhere to the party’s constitution and procedures. He noted that while the ADC welcomes interaction and realignment, this cannot come at the expense of its structure and constitution.
The development follows the adoption of the ADC by an opposition coalition that includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El‑Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Babachir Lawal, and Peter Obi. After the coalition’s adoption, Mark was elected Interim National Chairman and Aregbesola was named Interim National Secretary. However, the Gombe faction of the party, led by Nafiu Bala, opposed the move and initiated legal action against the coalition.
The ADC has been at the centre of political developments in recent months, with various factions and interests vying for control. Its constitution and procedures are expected to play a crucial role in resolving the current impasse. Monday’s statement suggests that the party is willing to engage with the Mark‑led leadership, but only within the bounds of the party’s rules and regulations. The outcome will likely have significant implications for the ADC and the broader political landscape. As the party navigates its internal conflicts, it remains to be seen whether the conditions set by the Bala faction will be met and what the consequences will be for the party’s future. Resolving these differences and presenting a united front will be crucial for the ADC in the coming months.
