Nigerian social‑media critic and activist Martin Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan or VDM, has launched a nationwide community‑service initiative called the Ratel Movement. The movement seeks to combat environmental decay and foster patriotism among young Nigerians through monthly community‑sanitisation activities. In a video posted on his Facebook page, VDM announced that the initiative will begin on 29 November 2025, focusing on cleaning public spaces, clearing drainage systems and rehabilitating school facilities. He stressed that the goal is to make a positive societal impact, not to promote violence or disruption.
According to VDM, the Ratel Movement will shift from an online presence to a tangible force, with members engaging in grassroots community service. The monthly activities are designed to address environmental problems and encourage civic responsibility among Nigerian youths, creating a lasting impact across the country. The announcement has generated interest among his followers, many of whom have expressed support for the initiative.
The movement’s emphasis on community service and environmental sustainability is viewed as a constructive response to some of Nigeria’s socio‑economic challenges. As the Ratel Movement prepares to launch its first activities, observers will watch how it is received by the wider public and what tangible effects it will have on communities nationwide. This initiative reflects a broader trend of civic activism in Nigeria, where young people increasingly use social media and community organising to tackle social and economic issues, aiming to promote national development and inspire further action.
