Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s media aide, Paul Ibe, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to rig Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. In a YouTube interview, Ibe claimed that the APC, led by President Bola Tinubu, has turned to rigging because it perceives a lack of achievements after more than two years in power. He said the party is working to suppress opposition from independent media, civil society and political parties, arguing that eliminating any dissent is the only way to secure victory in the upcoming polls.
Ibe asserted that the APC “has nothing to offer” after retaining its mandate for two years and has therefore begun the process of election rigging. He expressed concern that Nigeria’s democracy, established in 1999 at great cost with many activists losing their lives, is being replaced by dictatorship under the current administration. Ibe lamented that the harassment and intimidation of opposition figures such as Sowore would disappoint those who sacrificed for the country’s democratic freedoms.
The allegations underscore ongoing worries about electoral integrity and democratic governance in Nigeria. As the nation prepares for the 2027 elections, issues of vote rigging, opposition suppression and democratic erosion are likely to remain central. The APC has not responded to Ibe’s claims, and it remains to be seen how the party will address these concerns in the lead‑up to the elections.
