The Central Bank of Nigeria has launched the “Naira Our Pride: Handle with Care” campaign to encourage responsible handling of the naira. Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate, Bala Bello, warned that careless treatment—such as folding, tearing, and mutilating the notes—increases the cost of printing and replacement. He emphasized that the naira represents national pride, sovereignty, and a shared destiny, and that its dignity is undermined by such practices.
Bello stressed that the naira is more than a medium of exchange; proper handling is essential to maintaining its value and reducing expenses associated with printing new notes. He also cautioned against cash hoarding, especially during the festive season, because it disrupts circulation and places undue strain on the financial system.
The campaign is part of the central bank’s broader effort to improve the payment system and protect consumer rights. While the bank has ensured an adequate supply of banknotes nationwide, it urges banks, market operators, and citizens to keep the notes clean and fit for use. Currency‑issue expenses have risen sharply, climbing 306 % from ₦77.67 billion in 2023 to ₦315.18 billion in 2024.
By handling the naira with care, Nigerians can extend the lifespan of the notes, avoid unnecessary costs, and preserve the currency’s symbolic value. As the festive season approaches, the Central Bank reminds everyone of the importance of proper currency handling to maintain the integrity of the financial system.
