ICPC Partners INEC to Combat Vote Buying in Osun Elections

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has pledged to collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State to tackle corruption in the electoral process. A key area of focus for both agencies is combating vote buying, a prevalent issue in Nigerian elections.

During a visit to INEC’s Osun State office, ICPC’s Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Prince Yusuf Olatunji, emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two agencies, particularly with upcoming elections. Olatunji highlighted that the ICPC’s mandate extends beyond enforcement, encompassing prevention and enlightenment. As part of this effort, the ICPC aims to sensitize INEC staff and the public on the need to reject corruption at all levels.

Vote buying is a significant concern, and Olatunji stressed that the ICPC will work to educate the public that voting should not be influenced by financial inducements. He warned that individuals caught engaging in election-related corruption will face consequences. The ICPC boss acknowledged that corruption is a widespread issue in Nigerian society but emphasized the need for officials to uphold integrity.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, responded by emphasizing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in ensuring the success of elections. He commended the ICPC for recognizing INEC as a key partner and expressed commitment to sustaining the partnership. Agboke proposed a wider sensitization campaign, bringing together stakeholders to educate the public on the importance of shunning corruption.

The partnership between ICPC and INEC in Osun State aims to promote electoral integrity and prevent corrupt practices. With the approach of elections, the collaboration is crucial in ensuring the credibility of the process. By working together, both agencies seek to address the issue of vote buying and promote a free and fair electoral process. The success of this partnership will be critical in reinforcing the bedrock of democracy in Nigeria, which relies heavily on the integrity of INEC and the electoral process.
