The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State has urged prominent politicians—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El‑Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi—to formally register with the party at the ward level. Party chairman George Ashiru said this request is part of the ADC’s transition into a new phase. He explained that the party’s leadership has directed its chieftains to resign from their current parties and register with the ADC, a move that follows a closed‑door meeting of the party’s stakeholders.
The ADC has been adopted as the platform for a credible alternative coalition by the opposition. By having high‑profile politicians identify directly with the party in their respective wards and states, the ADC aims to move beyond coalition discussions and mobilization, establishing itself as a viable alternative. Some members of the opposition coalition have already left their parties, though they have not yet officially joined the ADC. Others who are being linked to the party still need to resign from their current affiliations.
Ashiru acknowledged that the registration process will take time, with several individuals indicating they will join the party in the coming months. The ADC’s decision to have prominent politicians register at the ward level is intended to build a strong foundation and demonstrate a commitment to grassroots politics. As the party continues to evolve, more high‑profile figures are likely to be called upon to register formally, and the leadership will be closely watched as it navigates Nigeria’s complex political landscape. With this transition, the ADC is poised to play a more significant role in the country’s political arena.
