The Ebonyi State government has denied allegations that it attacked members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at the People’s Club in Abakaliki. Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter‑Party Affairs, Sunday Nwanbam, described the reports as inaccurate and asserted that the state government is not “witch‑hunting” opposition politicians.
Nwanbam said the government maintains a cordial relationship with all 17 registered political parties in the state, a fact confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He emphasized that the administration protects the interests of every party and does not discriminate on the basis of political affiliation. According to him, the peaceful political climate in Ebonyi is a result of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s good administration, which prioritizes peace and stability. Since the 2023 general election, the state has experienced no political crises, demonstrating the government’s commitment to harmony among parties.
Regarding the alleged attack, Nwanbam clarified that no ADC member was attacked or arrested by government agents or security operatives. He urged political parties to conduct their meetings peacefully and to notify the relevant authorities in advance, ensuring the safety and security of attendees.
The government’s stance on inter‑party relations is one of cooperation and mutual respect. As the governor’s special adviser, Nwanbam’s role is to foster positive relationships between the government and all political parties, including the ADC. This support is reflected in the provision of resources and assistance to the Inter‑Party Advisory Council (IPAC), an umbrella body representing all parties in the state.
In response to the allegations, Nwanbam reassured the public that the government remains committed to maintaining peace and stability. He encouraged parties to focus on their activities and programs without fear of intimidation or harassment. The government’s position is clear: all political parties are valued, supported, and their rights to operate freely will be respected.
