A shooting at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday left one person dead and nine others wounded. The attack occurred at a busy Latter‑Day Saints congregation when a 40‑year‑old male suspect drove his car through the front doors and opened fire with an assault rifle. Police say the suspect was killed in a firefight with responding officers.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye reported that the shooting took place less than half an hour after the service began, at around 10:25 a.m. Ten victims were transported to local hospitals, including the individual who died at the scene. Authorities also believe the suspect deliberately set a fire, and drone footage captured the church’s roof engulfed in flames.
U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the attack, calling it a “targeted attack on Christians” and part of an “epidemic of violence” in the United States. In a statement, he said the incident was unacceptable and stressed the need to end violence nationwide. The shooting follows a recent incident in Dallas at an ICE facility, prompting Trump to vow a crackdown on what he describes as “radical left terrorism” and to sign an executive order aimed at dismantling domestic terrorism networks.
The investigation into the Michigan church shooting is ongoing. Officials expect to identify additional victims as the scene is cleared, and more details about the suspect’s motives are likely to emerge as the inquiry continues.
