Professor Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information and Orientation, announced that former President Goodluck Jonathan plans to run in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking to journalists in Minna, the capital of Niger State, Gana said Jonathan will be the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer.
Gana noted that Nigerians have lived under two different presidents since Jonathan’s tenure and are now expressing a desire for his return. He recalled Jonathan’s 2015 statement, in which the former president placed the nation’s stability above his personal ambition, saying “his ambition was not worth the blood of Nigerians.” Since then, another president served for eight years, followed by a third who has been in office for two years. According to Gana, the contrast in leadership is evident to Nigerians, who are now calling for Jonathan’s comeback.
He confirmed that Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election as the PDP candidate and urged preparations for his potential return to the presidency. The announcement comes as Nigeria readies itself for the upcoming election, scheduled for 2027. Jonathan’s candidacy is significant given his previous term as president from 2010 to 2015.
With the PDP selecting Jonathan as its candidate, the party appears to be banking on his experience and reputation to attract voters. The outcome of the 2027 election will depend on various factors, including the candidates, their campaigns, and the overall political climate in Nigeria. As the election approaches, political discourse is expected to intensify, with citizens and stakeholders closely monitoring developments and analyzing each candidate’s prospects.
