The Nigerian government has announced plans for a low‑key celebration of the country’s 65th Independence Day anniversary. Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris revealed the theme—“All Hands on Deck”—at a pre‑independence world press conference in Abuja on Monday.

The festivities began with Jummat prayers on Friday and a Thanksgiving service on Sunday. Among the scheduled activities is the unveiling of the National Value Charter, championed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA). This charter provides a framework to cultivate national pride and foster responsible citizenship by outlining both government commitments and citizens’ obligations. It is divided into two sections: the “Nigerian Promise,” which details the government’s dedication to equality, freedom, democracy, entrepreneurship, peace, inclusivity and meritocracy; and the “Citizen’s Commitment,” which specifies individual responsibilities such as discipline, accountability, tolerance, leadership and environmental awareness.

The NOA’s campaign will promote these principles through sensitisation drives, collaboration with community stakeholders and the use of digital platforms, aiming to build a more unified, value‑driven society. Another event on the program is a national students’ debate, adding an educational dimension to the celebrations.

The 65th Independence Day offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and challenges. Opting for a modest observance appears to acknowledge the current economic and social realities facing the country. Nonetheless, the unveiling of the National Value Charter and the accompanying activities underscore the government’s commitment to national unity and responsible citizenship. As Nigeria marks this milestone, the emphasis on shared values and civic duty is expected to resonate widely, fostering patriotism and national pride.
