Nigeria’s National Arts Theatre is set to reopen after a major renovation, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu scheduled to inaugurate the facility on Wednesday as part of the country’s 65th independence anniversary celebrations. The event marks a significant milestone in the nation’s cultural landscape.
A joint statement from the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Bankers’ Committee, and the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy describes the reopening as a testament to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and a strategic move to boost its creative industries. The renovated theatre will provide a world‑class platform for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and economic growth.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso noted that the National Arts Theatre represents a significant part of Nigeria’s history, while Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu emphasized its potential as a hub for global conferences and performances. The venue will house the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, showcasing the country’s vibrant arts, tourism, and cultural scene.
Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa described the renovated theatre as “a gift to the nation and a source of pride.” The project’s successful completion is attributed to the collective efforts of stakeholders to preserve cultural assets and create new opportunities for the creative industry. The Federal Executive Council approved 21.89 billion naira for the refurbishment in 2021.
As Nigeria celebrates its 65th year of independence, the reopened National Arts Theatre is poised to play a vital role in promoting Nigerian arts, culture, and creativity on the global stage. With state‑of‑the‑art facilities and a strategic location, it is expected to attract international attention, foster cultural exchange, and stimulate economic growth. The inauguration ceremony on Wednesday will mark a new era for the country’s creative industries.
