FG gives update on Dangote Refinery, PENGASSAN closed-door meeting

Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammad Dingyadi urged a swift resolution to the dispute between Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). Speaking at a meeting that brought together the two parties and other oil‑and‑gas stakeholders, Dingyadi stressed the need for an amicable solution that benefits the Nigerian economy, workers, and employers alike.

The meeting, chaired by the minister, focused on the alleged dismissal of PENGASSAN members. In response, the union ordered its members to halt gas and crude supplies to Dangote Refinery until the workers were reinstated. Dangote Refinery obtained an interim court order to prevent the union from disrupting its operations, describing the union’s actions as “bully and terror tactics.”

The dispute carries significant implications for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Dangote’s 650,000‑barrel‑per‑day plant is a vital component of the country’s energy infrastructure, and any interruption could have far‑reaching consequences. The minister’s intervention is therefore seen as a crucial step toward averting potential disruptions.

While the meeting represented a positive development in the effort to resolve the conflict, its outcome remained uncertain at the time of reporting. Dingyadi’s commitment to a solution that benefits all parties is welcomed, and there is hope that a mutually agreeable resolution will be reached soon.

The Nigerian government has a strong interest in maintaining stability in the oil and gas industry, a major contributor to the national economy. This dispute underscores the importance of effective dialogue and conflict‑resolution mechanisms within the sector. As events unfold, it is essential that all stakeholders work toward a resolution that prioritizes the interests of workers, employers, and the broader Nigerian economy.
