Enugu community demands transparent election as leadership crisis festers

The Mburubu community in Enugu State is demanding transparency in the election of its leadership after years of unresolved leadership issues. The Mburubu General Assembly says that every attempt to address the problem has stalled, prompting the community to reiterate its call for a free and fair contest. The Assembly warned against the imposition of leaders, stressing that executive members of the Town Union must be elected through a credible voting process.

In a statement to the media, the community accused Dr. Chidi Peters Okorie, a media aide to the Commissioner for Science and Technology, of presenting a distorted picture of the situation to Governor Peter Mbah. The Assembly claimed Okorie’s allegations were false, particularly the assertion that the Commissioner had called for the formation of a caretaker committee. According to the community, the Commissioner actually called for a pre‑election meeting between the State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Matters and the community’s stakeholders. The purpose of that meeting was to examine the community’s constitution, set election modalities, and establish procedures for forming an electoral panel and fixing the election date.

The Assembly denied claims that a town‑union election had been fixed, questioning who had cancelled the alleged election and who had formed the electoral panel. It also expressed concern over Okorie’s attempt to pre‑empt the outcome of a meeting before it took place and accused him of making baseless claims that the government was collecting N20 million to impose a caretaker committee. The community urged its people to remain vigilant and not allow political aides to create confusion, emphasizing the need for transparency, consultation, and respect for due process in leadership matters.

The Ministry’s openness to dialogue was welcomed, with the Assembly stating that genuine participation is essential for achieving lasting peace and progress in the community. As events unfold, the community’s demand for a transparent and fair election process remains a central concern.
