Zamfara State in Nigeria has reported 12,052 suspected cholera cases and 179 deaths, giving a fatality rate of 1.4 percent—significantly lower than the national average of 3.3 percent. The state’s Secretary to the Government, Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, disclosed these figures during a meeting with the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, which is led by Health Commissioner Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun. Nakwada attributed the relatively low fatality rate to the state’s intensified response across all 14 local government areas.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Gusau highlighted several effective case‑management strategies that have contributed to the improvement. These include the activation of Rapid Response Teams, active surveillance, and the establishment of Cholera Treatment Centres and Oral Dehydration Points throughout the state. Data from the National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirm that, despite the high number of suspected cases, Zamfara’s fatality rate remains lower than that of most other states.

The health response in Zamfara has been multifaceted, focusing on containing the disease and reducing the risk of further outbreaks. The Secretary to the State Government urged health workers to maintain their efforts, emphasizing that each recorded case represents a life at risk. The Cholera Treatment Centres and Oral Dehydration Points have been crucial for providing prompt medical attention, while the Rapid Response Teams enable swift action on new cases, helping to prevent further spread.

Although the cholera outbreak remains a significant public‑health concern, the state’s response has mitigated its impact, as reflected in the relatively low fatality rate. Health authorities acknowledge that continued vigilance and effort are essential to contain the disease. As the situation evolves, Zamfara’s health response will remain a key focus, aiming to reduce case numbers and prevent additional deaths. The WHO and other health organizations have stressed the importance of prompt, effective action in cholera outbreaks, and Zamfara’s efforts will be closely monitored.
