Cholera outbreak in Zamfara claims 179 lives from 12052 cases

Zamfara State in Nigeria has reported 12,052 suspected cholera cases and 179 deaths, giving a fatality rate of 1.4 percent—significantly lower than the national average of 3.3 percent. The state’s Secretary to the Government, Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, disclosed these figures during a meeting with the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, which is led by Health Commissioner Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun. Nakwada attributed the relatively low fatality rate to the state’s intensified response across all 14 local government areas.

State Epidemiologist Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Gusau highlighted several effective case‑management strategies that have contributed to the improvement. These include the activation of Rapid Response Teams, active surveillance, and the establishment of Cholera Treatment Centres and Oral Dehydration Points throughout the state. Data from the National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirm that, despite the high number of suspected cases, Zamfara’s fatality rate remains lower than that of most other states.
