Africa’s Prosperity Lies In Domestic Gas Development — Seplat Energy • Channels Television

Seplat Energy Plc has highlighted the crucial role of domestic gas in driving prosperity across Nigeria and Africa. Gas powers homes, fuels industry, and offers a cleaner alternative for cooking and transportation. Director of New Energy Okechukwu Mba made this point at the 2025 Africa Energy Week in Cape Town, South Africa, emphasizing the company’s commitment to expanding gas processing capacity for the domestic market. He cited the upcoming ANOH gas plant, slated to come online by year‑end, as a key project.

Mba noted that stakeholders must address challenges in the gas‑to‑power value chain to boost electricity supply for Nigerians. A commercially viable power sector, he added, is essential for growth in the domestic gas market. Currently, Seplat supplies gas to five Nigerian power stations, underscoring its dedication to the power sector. The company believes gas is well‑positioned to provide reliable, affordable baseload energy that drives economic growth.

To grow the domestic gas market, Seplat adopts a comprehensive approach that includes investments in pipeline gas projects, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facilities. The firm plans to begin LPG deliveries from its Sapele and ANOH plants before the end of the year, positioning itself as a leading LPG supplier in Nigeria. This shift is expected to displace biomass, offering a cleaner cooking fuel that improves health and living conditions. Seplat’s CNG investment aims to bring gas to customers not yet connected to the domestic pipeline network.

The company targets an increase in operated gas production to over 1 billion cubic feet per day by 2030, with recent government incentives to the gas sector expected to support this goal. Director of External Affairs and Social Performance Chioma Afe stressed the importance of upholding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) fundamentals in Seplat’s operations, particularly in expanding reliable, affordable energy access for Nigerians. Afe highlighted that adapting ESG to local needs is crucial; Seplat identifies development gaps in its operating areas, partners with communities to define project goals, and develops effective strategies to achieve them. The company’s commitment to ESG principles is intended to drive growth and empowerment across the continent, rather than serve as a mere bureaucratic exercise.
