Former Secretary to the Abia State government Ralph Egbu warned that inflammatory statements by opposition politicians—both within and outside the state—could jeopardize Abia’s peace. He made the remark in response to a speech delivered by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu at a reception for David Umahi, President Bola Tinubu’s representative, held at Aba stadium on Friday.
Egbu emphasized that the state’s current tranquil atmosphere, enjoyed by its diverse communities, should not be undermined by careless utterances. He pointed to Abia’s history of peaceful politics, which has avoided the destructive maneuvers that have plagued other states in the federation. As a former Commissioner for Information in Abia, Egbu alleged that opposition party members are now using verbal attacks to distract and undermine Governor Alex Otti, likely in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
He cautioned opposition members, whether inside or outside the state, against engaging in politics that could turn Abia into a violent arena similar to those seen elsewhere. The warning comes as Abia continues to experience a period of relative peace, with its politics characterized by an absence of the violent confrontations that often lead to loss of life, property destruction, and stalled development in other parts of the country.
Egbu’s statement underscores the need for politicians to exercise restraint in their public remarks, ensuring their words do not incite violence or destabilize the state. As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape in Abia remains uncertain, but his warning serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and stability. With its tradition of peaceful politics, it is likely that efforts will continue to preserve this atmosphere, safeguarding the well‑being and development of Abia State.
