Public affairs analyst Alaibi Joseph has suggested that former President Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi, and other potential candidates should compete in an open primary against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress. This proposal comes amid speculation about Atiku’s intention to run, which has reportedly caused concern within the ruling All Progressives Congress and among President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement, Joseph emphasized that democracy is about choice, not coronation, and noted that Nigerians have the freedom to select Atiku as Tinubu’s replacement in 2027 if they wish. He argued that Atiku’s political experience should be viewed as an asset rather than a liability due to his age. According to Joseph, the current disarray among opposition parties is not caused by Atiku’s refusal to retire but by fear of internal competition, genuine primaries, and the rise of merit over manipulation.

Joseph urged anyone who believes they have a mandate from the people to confront Atiku in an open contest, describing this as the essence of democracy. He stressed the need for Nigeria’s opposition to strengthen internal democracy, making the 2027 race a test of vision, strategy, and capacity. He suggested that if Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan, or other aspirants think they can lead better, they should participate in open primaries, arguing that democratic institutions mature through contest, not compromise.

The discussion around Atiku’s potential candidacy has sparked debate, with some speculating about his decision to run after hinting he might step aside for a younger candidate. As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the African Democratic Congress and other opposition parties are expected to finalize their candidates and strategies. Joseph’s proposed open primary could shape the election’s direction, allowing the people to decide through a democratic process.
