President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the late Ambassador Emmanuel Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa will be honored with a Special Official Funeral Category 2. The funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, 12 October 2025, in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu‑Natal.

Ambassador Mthethwa, who served as South Africa’s Head of Mission in Paris, France, died on 30 September 2025 at the age of 58. Over a 15‑year Cabinet tenure he held several portfolios, including Sport, Arts and Culture, Police, and Safety and Security. Before his appointment as Ambassador to France in December 2023, he had a long history of political involvement and leadership, earning recognition from both government and nation for his dedication to public service.

President Ramaphosa extended his deepest condolences to Ambassador Mthethwa’s wife, Ms. Philisiwe Buthelezi, and the extended Mthethwa and Buthelezi families, assuring them that the nation values the diverse roles the ambassador played in serving the country. The Special Official Funeral Category 2 will feature ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service, and the national flag will fly at half‑mast from 9 October until the evening of the funeral.

Ambassador Mthethwa’s body is currently being transported from France to South Africa. The funeral will be a significant event, honoring his contributions to the country and reflecting the importance of his role in promoting South Africa’s interests abroad. The ceremony will serve as a fitting tribute to his legacy, bringing the nation together to pay respects to a dedicated public servant.
