The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disbanded its Enugu State working committee, a decision taken during the party’s 179th National Working Committee meeting on Thursday in Abuja. The move comes ahead of the expected defection of Governor Peter Mbah to the APC.
According to reports, the dissolution occurred just two days after Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji resigned amid allegations of certificate forgery. Nnaji is a known ally of Barr Ugo Agballah, the former chairman of the APC in Enugu State. The National Working Committee (NWC) has therefore dissolved the Agballah‑led State Working Committee (SWC) with immediate effect.
In its place, a seven‑member caretaker committee has been established. Barr Ben Nwoye, former state party chairman, has been appointed as chairman, while Barr Eugene Odo, a former Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, will serve as secretary. The other members are Dr. Ben Nwoye (Chairman), H.E. Mrs. Fidelia Njoeze, Comrade Peter Chime, Dr. (Mrs.) Oby Ajih, Dr. Chiedozie Nwafor, Engr. Emma Ekeh, and Rt. Hon. Eugene Odoh (Secretary). The resolution, signed by Hon. Durosinmi Meseko, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, states that the NWC approved the dissolution of the APC Enugu State Executive Committee after a comprehensive review of the party’s state.
The caretaker committee is set to be inaugurated on Friday. This development coincides with expectations that Governor Peter Mbah will join the APC, despite initial resistance from Agballah and Nnaji. Foundation members, including Nwoye and Mr. Osita Okechukwu, have affirmed that the party is ready to welcome the governor. His defection is now anticipated within a few days, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
