The Inter‑Party Advisory Council has voiced confidence in Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the newly appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Council National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle highlighted Amupitan’s litigation expertise as a valuable asset for sanitising Nigeria’s electoral process. In an interview on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” programme, Dantalle noted that Amupitan’s background as a law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria will enable him to navigate the complex legal issues that frequently arise during elections.
The National Council of State approved Amupitan’s nomination as INEC chairman on Thursday, and he is expected to apply his expertise to the challenges confronting the electoral body. His appointment comes at a time of significant reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system. The previous administration, led by Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, introduced technological innovations aimed at improving election conduct, but the Inter‑Party Advisory Council believes further steps are needed, including the passage of relevant laws by the National Assembly.
Council chairman Dantalle emphasized the importance of fostering a better political atmosphere, which can be achieved by implementing the recommendations sent to the National Assembly. With Amupitan at the helm of INEC, there are hopes that the electoral process will become more transparent and credible. The success of his tenure will depend on his ability to build on the foundations laid by his predecessor and to address the longstanding challenges that have hindered elections.
As Nigeria prepares for future polls, Amupitan’s appointment is seen as a significant development. His legal and technical expertise will be crucial in tackling the issues that often arise during elections. The council’s expression of confidence in his ability to sanitise the electoral process signals a positive outlook for free and fair elections in Nigeria.
