Lagos LG poll: Tension in Yaba APC as stakeholders call for fresh primary

Muhammad Lawal Kurya, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kaura Namoda South in the last Zamfara State House of Assembly election, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made on Saturday at a political gathering in the Taula Arena, Gusau, organized by Yazeed Shehu Danfulani Projects. This switch follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration that APC’s Kamilu Sa’idu won the August supplementary election for the Kaura Namoda South constituency.

Kurya said his departure from the PDP stems from dissatisfaction with Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration, which he accuses of failing to address the state’s worsening insecurity. He argued that joining the APC would allow him to support the efforts of Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle to restore peace and stability in Zamfara. Urging his supporters to back the APC, Kurya expressed confidence that the party is better positioned to tackle the state’s security and development challenges.

Kurya’s defection could have significant implications for Zamfara’s political landscape. As the state continues to grapple with security concerns, the move may be seen as a strategic effort to strengthen support for the APC’s stability initiatives. With the APC already holding a strong presence in the region, Kurya’s shift may further consolidate the party’s position. Political observers are likely to watch this development closely, given the ongoing dynamics in Zamfara politics. As the state navigates its security and developmental challenges, the roles of political parties and their leaders will be crucial in shaping its future, and the APC may now play an even more prominent role in addressing these pressing issues.
