Those leaving our party are driven by self-interest - Adamawa PDP

The Adamawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attributes recent defections to personal interests rather than party shortcomings. Dogo Victor, the party’s Publicity Secretary, dismissed the reasons given by defectors as self‑serving. In an interview with the Correspondents Chapel of the Adamawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Yola, he stressed that there are no significant internal problems that would justify leaving the PDP.

Dogo cited two recent examples: Chief Crowther Seth, the immediate past deputy governor, who quit the party in June, and Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate, who defected more recently. He noted that despite Atiku’s departure, his son Adamu Atiku remains a prominent PDP member and serves as Commissioner of Works, underscoring the role of personal political interests in these moves.

Having assumed the role of state PDP Publicity Secretary earlier this month, Dogo also addressed disagreements that followed the state congress. He acknowledged that it is natural for those who felt sidelined by the process to express dissatisfaction, but emphasized that the party has set up a reconciliation committee to resolve such differences.

While the PDP has seen several notable members leave in recent months, Dogo’s comments suggest the party remains confident in its internal dynamics and is actively working to address grievances through the reconciliation committee. As the political landscape in Adamawa State evolves, the PDP’s ability to manage internal conflicts and retain its membership will be crucial for maintaining its regional influence. The party’s stance highlights the complex, often personal nature of political affiliations in Nigeria, and its approach to handling defections could serve as a model for other parties seeking to navigate coalition building and membership retention. With the reconciliation committee in place, the PDP is taking steps to heal divisions and move forward, while acknowledging the impact of personal interests on the political arena.
