The United States Army War College has posthumously inducted Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, into its prestigious International Hall of Fame. The induction took place during the opening ceremony of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Convention in Washington, D.C.

Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, said the honor marks a major milestone for Nigeria, as General Lagbaja is the first Nigerian officer ever enshrined in the USAWC International Hall of Fame in its 124‑year history. Major General Trevor J. Bredenkamp, Commandant of the USAWC, presented the posthumous award in recognition of the late general’s “sterling leadership, visionary service, and outstanding contributions to international peace and security.”

The ceremony highlighted General Lagbaja’s exemplary service and distinguished career, which culminated in his appointment as Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff. Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, representing the current Chief of Army Staff, received the honor on behalf of the Nigerian Army, accompanied by Maria Lagbaja, the general’s widow. Other dignitaries present included Major General G.O. Adesina, Director General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, and Deborah Aboderin of the Office of Security Cooperation, U.S. Embassy, Abuja.

In a message, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede expressed pride and gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon one of Nigeria’s most distinguished military leaders. The award reinforces the Nigerian Army’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and global peacekeeping ideals.

This year’s USAWC International Hall of Fame induction featured six eminent alumni, cementing General Lagbaja’s place among an elite circle of global military leaders celebrated for extraordinary contributions to peace and international cooperation. The honor underscores the strong ties between the Nigerian and United States armies and demonstrates the Nigerian Army’s dedication to global peacekeeping and cooperation, as reflected in its participation in the AUSA 2025 Annual Convention. The recognition of General Lagbaja’s service and sacrifice will inspire current and future military leaders, emphasizing the importance of professionalism, discipline, and international collaboration in achieving peace and security.
