The African Democratic Congress has urged Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to place service above personal interests. The call follows Wike’s recent criticism of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who visited a government primary school in Abuja and voiced concern about its dilapidated infrastructure and poor learning environment.
In a statement released by ADC‑FCT Publicity Secretary Chukwudi Samuel, the party said Wike’s reaction was unbecoming of his office. Rather than responding defensively, the minister should have used Obi’s observations as an opportunity to address the problems and improve the school’s conditions. According to the ADC, effective leadership is centered on serving the people, not on personal ego or interests.
The party emphasized that when any citizen—regardless of status—highlights shortcomings in governance, a responsible leader must focus on resolving the issues rather than reacting negatively. Wike’s earlier criticism of Obi’s visit was therefore deemed misguided; the ADC argued that the minister should have taken concrete action to tackle the deficiencies Obi identified.
The incident underscores the importance of constructive engagement and responsiveness in governance. By prioritizing service over personal interests, leaders can create a more positive and productive environment for citizens. The ADC’s appeal serves as a reminder that leaders must remain committed to the well‑being of the people they serve.
