Traditional rulers from Northern Nigeria have gathered in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, for a two‑day meeting to address pressing issues in the region, including the escalating insecurity in the North West. The meeting, which begins on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday, will be officially opened by Governor Nasir Idris, with the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, serving as host.
Several first‑class traditional rulers arrived in Birdin Kebbi on Monday, ahead of the summit. Notable attendees include the Emir of Kagara, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna; the Etsu Nupe, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar; the Shehu of Bama, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Kyari Umar El‑Kanemi; and the Emir of Biu. Upon arrival, the Shehu of Bama and the Emir of Biu paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al‑Amin El‑Kanemi, at his guest house in Birnin Kebbi.
The gathering is organized under the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and aims to deliberate on worsening insecurity and other socio‑economic challenges confronting the northern region. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, leads the delegation of traditional rulers. The council’s meeting is significant because it brings together prominent leaders to discuss and seek solutions to the region’s problems.
The North West has been experiencing growing insecurity, with incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.
