The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported that its operatives and members of the Nigerian Army were attacked by suspected drug barons in Ukpuje, Owan West Local Government of Edo State. According to Mitchel Ofoyeju, the NDLEA’s Edo State commander, the incident occurred on October 27 when the teams moved to dismantle cannabis farms in the area. Armed cultivators ambushed the officers, opening fire to repel the operation. After a brief exchange of fire, the NDLEA team withdrew tactically to avoid further casualties.
Mr. Ofoyeju said the officers responded professionally and managed to retreat safely once the situation turned hostile. One officer was injured by a sharp object during the attack; he received medical attention and is now in stable condition. No lives were lost, and the injured officer is recovering, the commander confirmed.
The Ukpuje operation forms part of the NDLEA’s broader anti‑narcotics strategy aimed at curbing cannabis cultivation and trafficking in Edo, a leading drug‑production hub in Nigeria. In collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, the NDLEA remains committed to restoring safety and order in the state. Mr. Ofoyeju appealed to community leaders and residents to assist the agency by providing intelligence that could help identify and apprehend those involved in illicit drug activities, emphasizing that community cooperation is essential for a safer, drug‑free Edo State.
The agency will continue to intensify operations in drug‑prone areas such as Ukpuje and ensure that the perpetrators of these criminal networks are brought to justice. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian law‑enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking and cultivation. With continued community support and cooperation from other security forces, the NDLEA aims to make significant progress toward creating a safer and healthier environment for all Nigerians.
