Ogun Govt seals Adatan market, restaurant over environmental infractions

The Ogun State Government has taken decisive action against environmental infractions by sealing the Adatan Market in Abeokuta. Traders there were repeatedly warned about reckless waste disposal and unauthorized roadside trading, but they failed to comply. According to Farouk Akintunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Protection and Chairman of the Ogun State Task Force on Environmental Compliance, the market was closed after months of engagements because traders were dumping waste indiscriminately into drainage channels and displaying goods on walkways and drains, posing a serious threat to the environment.

The government has made it clear that it will no longer tolerate disregard for environmental regulations. Traders are now required to maintain the drainage channels in front of their shops, and the state has designated Thursdays as a sanitation day for markets, a directive that must be strictly observed.

In addition to the Adatan Market closure, other establishments in Abeokuta have also been sealed for environmental violations. Alaga Restaurant and Cintinatti Bar were shut down due to poor wastewater management, with effluent being discharged into the environment. These enforcement actions underscore the state’s zero‑tolerance policy toward pollution and its commitment to keeping Ogun State clean.

Overall, the government’s efforts to enforce environmental regulations serve as a reminder to businesses and individuals of the importance of adhering to these rules and taking responsibility for their actions. As the crackdown continues, more establishments are likely to be held accountable, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
