A total of 170 foreign nationals have applied for Nigerian citizenship, according to Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo. The figure was disclosed in a statement released after a meeting of the Citizenship Advisory Committee in Abuja. The committee, which reviews and recommends citizenship applications for approval to President Bola Tinubu, includes senior officials from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The Minister emphasized the administration’s commitment to transparency and integrity in the citizenship process, noting that Nigerian citizenship is a privilege that must be carefully granted. “Our promise stands,” Tunji‑Ojo said, reaffirming the goal of making Nigeria a prosperous nation and a destination of interest under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership. The committee views this exercise as a test of its integrity and is determined to uphold the trust placed in it by Nigerians.
In evaluating the applications, the committee will prioritize integrity and proven character, recognizing citizenship of the “biggest Black nation on earth” as a valuable asset that requires careful consideration. The development comes as the government continues to explore ways to enhance Nigeria’s attractiveness to foreign investors and nationals. With a large and diverse population, Nigeria offers a unique opportunity for foreigners seeking to join a vibrant and growing economy.
The application process is expected to be rigorous, focusing on ensuring that applicants meet the necessary criteria and undergo thorough background checks. As the committee begins its review of the 170 applications, Nigerians can anticipate a thorough and transparent procedure. The government’s commitment to integrity and transparency in the citizenship process is a positive step toward maintaining the trust and confidence of its citizens. The outcome of the applications will be closely watched, with decision‑making guided by the principles of fairness, integrity and national interest.
