The Zamfara chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to its mission despite recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The statement follows the departure of Maharazu Faru, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, who left the PDP citing Governor Dauda Lawal’s alleged failure to fulfill campaign promises. Faru, together with PDP executives from five wards, joined the APC, arguing that the governor had not addressed key challenges such as insecurity—a major issue in his election.
The PDP, however, downplayed the significance of Faru’s defection, saying it was not surprised by his decision. Party Publicity Secretary Halliru Andi warned that those who prioritize personal interests over the collective will of the people often find themselves on the wrong side of history. The PDP expressed confidence in Governor Lawal’s leadership, highlighting his efforts to restore hope, strengthen institutions, and safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Zamfara’s citizens. The party believes its ongoing reforms and development initiatives demonstrate a genuine commitment to progress and compassion.
Despite Faru’s exit, the PDP still holds a majority in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, with 14 members compared to the APC’s 10 lawmakers. The party called on its members and supporters to remain steadfast, asserting that no defection can shake its foundation or alter the will of the people. It remains confident of a decisive victory in the next elections, expecting to win overwhelmingly at all levels.
The defections underscore the evolving political dynamics in Zamfara, where the PDP controls the state government while the APC dominates at the federal level. As the landscape continues to shift, the PDP’s ability to maintain its support base and deliver on its promises will be crucial to its future success.
