The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced a large‑scale prepaid‑meter installation program for its service areas in Nigeria. The initiative is part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), a US$500 million project backed by the World Bank. Its primary goals are to improve power‑supply management, increase transparency and eliminate estimated billing practices.
KEDCO will distribute 128,000 prepaid meters free of charge to electricity consumers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states. Dr Abubakar S. Jimeta, the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the program will prioritize existing unmetered customers across the three states. Preparations for the installation are in advanced stages, although a specific start date has not yet been disclosed.
DISREP aims to boost the financial and technical performance of Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos), reduce commercial losses and promote accountability within the power sector. Launched by the Federal Government in partnership with the World Bank, the programme seeks to restore the sector’s financial viability by closing the metering gap, modernising grid infrastructure and introducing performance‑based incentives for DisCos.
The mass‑metering effort is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s power sector, especially in KEDCO’s service regions. By providing prepaid meters, the company hopes to curb billing disputes, enhance customer satisfaction and support the government’s broader objectives of expanding electricity access and improving sector efficiency. The World Bank’s backing of DISREP underscores the international community’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges and advancing the country’s economic development.
