Somalia’s Southwest State authorities have introduced measures to address the resurgence of intercommunal violence in the region. The move aims to hold accountable individuals accused of fuelling clan conflicts and revenge killings. Senior officials, including the Minister of Interior, Local Government and Reconciliation, announced an intensification of peace‑building efforts through dialogue with traditional elders and community leaders. The regional administration seeks to end ongoing hostilities in parts of the Bay and Bakool regions.

The minister warned that anyone spreading hate speech or inciting violence will face prosecution, emphasizing that the government will not tolerate actions that undermine peace and stability. Those responsible for incitement or promoting violence will be brought to justice, he said. Preliminary peace agreements have been reached to halt recent clashes in Diinsoor district, which have resulted in fatalities and the displacement of families. The Ministry of Interior confirmed these agreements, underscoring the government’s commitment to restoring peace and promoting reconciliation among communities.

Authorities also vowed to act against individuals using social media to spread inflammatory messages that could reignite old rivalries. The Southwest administration urged residents to support ongoing peace initiatives and to report anyone attempting to rekindle clan tensions to security agencies. Given Somalia’s history of intercommunal violence, the government’s efforts to promote peace and stability are crucial. The introduction of these measures marks a significant step toward addressing the root causes of the conflicts and fostering lasting peace. By promoting dialogue and reconciliation, the authorities aim to create an environment conducive to peace and stability, though the success of these efforts will depend on local community support and the effectiveness of the government’s strategies in tackling the complex issues underlying the conflicts.
