Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demonstrate its independence in the upcoming Anambra State governorship election. He specifically addressed INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu—clarifying that Joash Amupitan is not the commission’s chairman—and urged him to safeguard the body’s integrity.
The election, scheduled for 6 November, offers INEC a chance to prove its commitment to free and fair elections. In a Facebook post, Atiku encouraged Anambra voters to mobilise and support the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Nwosu Chima John, and his running mate, Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi. He argued that a credible vote is essential to end the era of poor governance in the state and to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from manipulating the outcome. Atiku expressed confidence that the people of Anambra would choose a leader who could bring prosperity and economic stability.
As one of Nigeria’s off‑cycle elections, the Anambra governorship race holds significance beyond the state. It will test INEC’s ability to conduct a transparent and credible poll, a concern shared by many Nigerians who seek improvements in the country’s electoral process. Local and international observers will closely monitor the vote, and its result is expected to influence the broader political landscape.
High voter turnout is anticipated, with citizens eager to elect a leader capable of addressing Anambra’s developmental challenges. The election thus presents an important opportunity for INEC to demonstrate its independence and commitment to credible elections—an essential step toward deepening democracy in Nigeria.
