Former SDP guber candidate Baido dumps APC for ruling party

In a significant development for Taraba State’s political landscape, Danladi Baido Tijo—who was the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections—has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced the move on Tuesday during a meeting with his campaign council at his residence in Jalingo, the state capital.

Baido said his decision to join the APC was driven by the impressive progress made by Governor Agbu Kefas in less than two years in office. He praised Kefas as a visionary leader with a transformative agenda aimed at uniting the state across political, religious, and ethnic lines. Baido urged voters, youths, and political groups to support the Kefas administration to ensure the continued delivery of democratic dividends in Taraba State.

Leaders of Baido’s campaign groups have pledged their loyalty as he begins his new political chapter with the APC. A.A. Liman and Senator Ibrahim Goje commended the move, describing it as bold and patriotic and in the best interest of the state.

Baido’s defection is seen as a strategic shift, given the APC’s current governance of Taraba State. Governor Kefas has been implementing various development projects to improve the state’s infrastructure and economy, while the SDP has been seeking to expand its influence. The defection could affect political dynamics, potentially influencing future elections and the balance of power.

As the APC continues to consolidate its position, other parties may need to reassess their strategies to remain relevant. Baido’s move is likely to strengthen the APC’s grip on the state, potentially leading to more stable governance and attracting additional politicians to its ranks. The evolving political landscape will determine how this defection impacts Taraba’s development and the future of its parties.
