The Australian government has announced plans to ban social‑media platforms for children under the age of 16, with the ban taking effect on 10 December. The measure, intended to protect minors from online harm, will require popular services such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and streaming giant Kick to remove users younger than 16. Companies that fail to comply could face fines of up to Aus$49.5 million (US$32 million).
Communications Minister Anika Wells said that online platforms use technology to target children, and it is only fair that the same technology be used to keep them safe. The government’s goal is to give children a safe childhood and provide parents with peace of mind. This ban forms part of a broader effort to regulate social media and mitigate its potential dangers for minors, a challenge that regulators worldwide are grappling with.
While the ban is among the strictest in the world, some experts caution that it may be largely symbolic. Platforms such as Roblox, Discord and WhatsApp are not currently covered, although the streaming site Twitch is under review. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant emphasized that age restrictions are an important step in preventing social‑media harm, but they are not a quick fix. The government also noted that the list of banned platforms is not fixed and may be revised over time.
Social‑media companies have previously described the legislation as “vague,” “problematic” and “rushed.” Kick, which has faced scrutiny after a fatal livestreaming incident in France, said it will continue to engage with the Australian government to seek fair outcomes. The company asserts that it aims to protect online safety without compromising privacy or limiting creative freedom.
The Australian government’s move represents a significant step in regulating social media and protecting minors.
