APC group lauds Gov. Yusuf for settling gratuities of ex-Kano councillors — Daily Nigerian

A civil‑society group, Volunteers for Democracy, within the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, has commended Governor Abba Yusuf for settling the gratuities of former supervisory councillors. The group’s national president, Alhaji Usman, a former Secretary to the State Government, praised the governor for including APC former councillors in the settlement, describing it as a rare instance of setting aside political differences. Volunteers for Democracy noted that this was the first time the governor had made such a payment without conditions.

The organization also lauded the ongoing road projects in Kano, particularly within the metropolis, and urged the government to sustain the pace of development. However, it expressed concern over the relocation of Government Secondary School Maikwatashi from Sabongari to Kaura Goje in Nassarawa Local Government Area. Mr. Usman called the move “unfortunate and ill‑advised,” citing the potential disruption to the education of affected students and the existing problem of out‑of‑school children in the state, which expert reports indicate is the highest in Nigeria.

In addition, Volunteers for Democracy lamented the deteriorating relationship between security agencies—especially the Nigeria Police Force—and the state government. The group emphasized the need for cooperation to address the mounting security challenges in Kano. While the settlement of gratuities and ongoing development projects are significant steps toward improving citizens’ lives, the school relocation and strained security relations remain concerns that must be addressed to ensure peace and sustainable development. The comments of Volunteers for Democracy highlight the necessity for the government to prioritize education and security, working toward a more stable and prosperous environment for all.
