The Anambra State governorship election is scheduled for today, Saturday, 8 November 2025. Anambra is one of eight Nigerian states that hold elections outside the general election timetable, joining Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo, Osun, Ondo, Edo and Ekiti. The state’s off‑cycle governorship election dates back to 2003, when a court ruling removed Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from office and installed Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as governor after a two‑year tribunal case.
This year, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 16 candidates to contest the race: Onyeeze Chidi (A), Nweke Ezechukwu‑Japhet (AA), Ifemeludike Chioma Grace (AAC), Nwosu Chima John (ADC), Ukachukwu Nicholas (APC), Soludo Charles (APGA), Otti Cyprian Echezona (APM), Nweke Christopher Chukwudubem (APP), Okeke Chika Jerry (BP), Moghalu George (LP), Onyejgbu Geoffrey (NNPP), Ndidi Christy Olieh (NRM), Ezenwafor Jude (PDP), Chukwurah Vincent (SDP), Chukwuma Paul Chukwuka (YPP) and Ugwoji Uchenna (ZLP). Incumbent governor Charles Soludo is a major contender in the contest.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has reassured the public that the commission is fully prepared for the election, deploying 24,000 personnel to manage the polls. Voting will take place in 5,718 of the state’s 5,720 polling units; the remaining two units have been excluded because they have no registered voters.
As the election gets underway, the people of Anambra State will choose their next leader, a decision that will shape the state’s direction for the next four years.
