Mali: African Union Commission calls for urgent international action on security crisis

The African Union Commission has voiced deep concern over Mali’s worsening security situation and is calling for urgent international action. Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf condemned recent jihadist attacks on civilians, especially those carried out by the al‑Qaeda‑linked Jama’at Nasr al‑Islam wal‑Muslimin (JNIM). In recent months JNIM has intensified its assaults across the country and imposed a blockade on the capital, Bamako, in retaliation for the military’s ban on fuel sales in rural areas. The blockade has crippled Mali’s fragile economy, preventing fuel trucks from reaching the capital and triggering a severe fuel crisis.

The Commission also denounced the sharply deteriorating humanitarian conditions for civilians, noting the abduction of three Egyptian nationals by JNIM and demanding their immediate, unconditional release. The escalating insecurity has prompted several countries, including France and the United States, to urge their citizens to leave Mali.

In response, the African Union Commission is urging an international effort based on cooperation and intelligence sharing to combat terrorism in the Sahel. Such a response is seen as essential to counter the growing threat posed by JNIM and other extremist groups. While the security situation in Mali has been deteriorating for years, with extremist groups exploiting the country’s instability, the international community’s support for the Malian government has so far been insufficient to address the root causes of the crisis.

Humanitarian concerns are equally pressing, with thousands displaced and in need of assistance. JNIM’s blockade has further hampered aid delivery, exacerbating the crisis. The Commission’s call for urgent action underscores the need for a coordinated and sustained response to both security and humanitarian challenges.

In the coming weeks and months, it is likely that the international community will increase its efforts to support Mali and the broader Sahel region. This will require a coordinated approach involving governments, international organizations, and civil society to tackle the complex challenges of extremism and instability. The African Union Commission’s appeal is a crucial step toward prompting a swift and effective international response.
