A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has urged its members nationwide to boycott the party’s planned national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. The group says a recent court order has invalidated the convention process, creating legal uncertainty around the event.
The warning follows a lawsuit filed by former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, which resulted in a court pronouncement that the Wike bloc believes has introduced fresh legal doubts. Acting National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor said the party cannot proceed with the Ibadan gathering until its internal disputes are resolved and stakeholders agree on the next steps. He added that the ruling secured earlier in the week further discredits the event, leaving it without legal or organizational foundation. Osadolor urged party members not to travel or spend money to attend, likening the convention to an “early Christmas party” that is not properly constituted or organized.
The development adds another twist to the PDP’s ongoing internal conflicts, marked by power struggles and factionalization. While the party works to settle its disputes and prepare for upcoming elections, the recent court order and the Wike faction’s boycott threat raise concerns about its ability to move forward. The national convention, a crucial event for bringing together party leaders and stakeholders to discuss key issues and chart a future course, now faces uncertainty. Party leadership will need to navigate these challenges, resolve internal disputes, and ensure the convention can proceed as planned to ready the PDP for the elections ahead.
