Hon. Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives for Kano Municipal Federal Constituency and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on November 11, 2025. In a letter addressed to the Zaitawa Ward Chairperson, Koki cited persistent leadership crises at the party’s national level as the reason for his departure, explaining that the internal turmoil had made it “difficult, if not impossible” for him to effectively represent his constituents in the House.
Koki expressed gratitude to the NNPP for providing a platform that he described as invaluable, and he noted that his resignation complies with Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution as well as the party’s own constitution. His exit follows closely on the heels of another NNPP lawmaker, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa of Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) two days earlier.
These departures suggest deeper challenges within the NNPP that could affect its stability and cohesion in the legislature. Koki’s resignation may also impact the work of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and the representation of his constituents’ interests. The party’s leadership will need to address these internal issues to prevent further defections and to maintain its influence in the House of Representatives. Consequently, the NNPP will have to reorganize its representation on the Petroleum Resources Committee and possibly adjust its legislative strategy to preserve its standing in the chamber.
