Tensions are rising within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Nigeria, after allegations surfaced that party chairman Alphonsus Eba is trying to impose former Governor Ben Ayade as the senatorial candidate for Cross River North in 2027. Party members say Eba’s actions are driven by personal loyalty to Ayade rather than the party’s interests, sparking widespread discontent.
The controversy deepened when Eba reportedly announced plans to seek re‑election as party chairman, angering chapter chairmen who are dissatisfied with his leadership. In a recent communique, 18 APC chapter chairmen and secretaries accused Eba of corruption and other misconduct, calling for his resignation. Yesterday, party members blocked access to the state party secretariat in Calabar to protest what they view as Eba’s manipulation of party structures to favor Ayade.
Stakeholders fear that Eba’s actions could destabilize the party, especially after Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Jarigbe’s move was seen as a significant boost for the APC in the northern district, traditionally dominated by the PDP. Public affairs analyst and University of Calabar lecturer Dr. Joseph Odok warned that imposing Ayade would be counterproductive, stating, “The state chairman should not be seen as central to any plot to impose personal preferences on the party.” He emphasized the urgent need for internal reforms to enhance inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.
Eba has dismissed the allegations and calls for his resignation as politically motivated, accusing the chapter chairmen of embezzling party funds. His defiance has heightened tensions, threatening to undermine the APC’s prospects in future elections. As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain how the party will address its members’ concerns and whether it can overcome internal divisions to maintain relevance in Cross River State.
