At least 50 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Kibiya Ward in Kano State’s Kibiya Local Government Area have defected to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The shift was announced by Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, in a statement released on Wednesday in Kano.

Commissioner Adamu Kibiya of the ministry said the defectors were welcomed into the NNPP because of Governor Abba Yusuf’s commitment to good governance and development projects. The governor has launched initiatives in health, education, infrastructure, empowerment and agriculture that have benefited Kano residents. Commissioner Kibiya urged the new members to stay loyal to the party, assuring them that the NNPP would support them in ensuring the administration’s success.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Yakubu Alhaji explained that they joined the NNPP in recognition of the party’s dedication to development and good governance under Governor Yusuf’s administration. Auwalu Sarki, the councillor for Kibiya Ward, added that additional groups are set to join the NNPP, praising Commissioner Kibiya’s efforts in promoting the party and Governor Yusuf’s policies in the local government area. Sarki credited the commissioner’s work as instrumental in attracting supporters to the party.

The defection of these APC members to the NNPP highlights a shifting political landscape in Kano State. The NNPP has been gaining momentum in the region, bolstered by Governor Yusuf’s development projects and initiatives aimed at improving residents’ lives. As the political scene continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this defection will affect the state’s dynamics. With more groups expected to join the NNPP, the party’s influence in Kano State is likely to grow, potentially shaping the outcome of future elections.
