A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered former acting Accountant‑General of the Federation, Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to enter his defence in a N1.96 billion money‑laundering case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho dismissed Nwabuoku’s application for a no‑case submission, which sought to have the court clear him of all charges. The judge found that the EFCC had presented sufficient evidence—including documents and testimonies from nine witnesses—to establish a prima facie case that requires the former Accountant‑General to respond.

Justice Omotosho emphasized that the prosecution’s evidence provides adequate grounds for the defendant to open his defence or present a rebuttal. He clarified that the decision does not constitute a declaration of guilt; rather, it gives Nwabuoku an opportunity to address the allegations. The court noted that he must explain his connection to the funds he is accused of receiving and defend against the evidence presented, as the constitutional right to defence is guaranteed.

The EFCC’s case includes testimony from various witnesses, such as bank officials and investigators, who allege that Nwabuoku received and laundered funds intended for the federal government. The ruling marks a significant development in a case that has been ongoing for several months. After the defence requested additional time to prepare, the trial was adjourned to 24 and 25 November for continuation.

The outcome will be closely watched, given the involvement of a high‑ranking government official and the allegations of substantial financial impropriety. The decision underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in public office and the need for officials to be held responsible for their actions.
