Gov. Kefas absent as Taraba communities hold mass burial for victims of herders' attack

Renovations are currently underway in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, prompting speculation that Governor Agbu Kefas may defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The long‑abandoned Jolly Nyame Stadium is being refurbished with fresh paint, structural repairs and new construction, while state roads are being patched and smoothed by bulldozers. Residents, who have long regarded the roads as hazardous, have noted the sudden surge in infrastructural activity.

In addition to the physical upgrades, PDP billboards have been taken down and party flags lowered, further fueling rumors of the governor’s impending defection. Sources claim the renovations aim to impress top APC leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Vice President, who are expected to attend the official defection ceremony scheduled for 19 November.

Political analysts have criticized the projects as “reactive governance,” questioning why the stadium and other public facilities were neglected for decades only to receive attention ahead of a political event. They warn that the newly repaired roads may be abandoned once the ceremony concludes, raising concerns about the sustainability of these works.

Workers involved in the renovations report that they have been instructed to finish all major tasks before 17 November, with many putting in extended hours to meet the deadline. Meanwhile, vendors selling brooms—an APC symbol—have seen increased sales as some PDP supporters begin to switch allegiance.

As the defection date approaches, residents are closely watching the developments. The renovations and political changes carry significant implications for Taraba State’s infrastructure and political landscape. While the governor’s potential defection has generated considerable interest, the long‑term impact of the renovations on the state’s development remains uncertain. All eyes are now on Taraba State as the ceremony draws near, awaiting its outcome and possible consequences.
