Defection: North-Central APC Forum insists on Mutfwang, rejects Plateau party leaders' resolution

The North‑Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has denounced the protests held in Jos, Plateau State, against Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s potential defection to the party. The forum, which has been actively campaigning for Mutfwang to join the APC, described the demonstrations as undemocratic and unconstitutional.

On Saturday, some APC members in Plateau State staged a protest during an event meant to receive new defectors, carrying placards that read “Mutfwang is not welcome” in the party. The North‑Central APC Forum condemned this action, stating that every individual has the right to join a political party of their choice.

Forum chairman Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga emphasized that Mutfwang’s membership would benefit the APC, especially ahead of the 2027 elections. He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and call the Plateau chapter leaders to order, warning that their actions could hinder the party’s progress.

The forum also criticized Plateau APC leaders for opposing Mutfwang’s defection, alleging that their motives are selfish and driven by personal ambitions for the 2027 elections. According to the forum, such opposition may indirectly work against Tinubu’s re‑election bid in 2027.

Since October, the North‑Central APC Forum has been advocating for Mutfwang to join the party, despite a resolution passed by Plateau State APC leaders that opposed his defection. The forum argued that the resolution was undemocratic and unconstitutional because it was adopted without input from all stakeholders.

The campaign to recruit Mutfwang is reportedly backed by influential individuals within the Presidency. The forum has threatened to report the Plateau APC leaders who are blocking the governor’s defection to President Tinubu if they do not cease their actions.

These developments come as the APC prepares for the 2027 elections and seeks to strengthen its presence in Plateau State. Recruiting a sitting governor is seen as a strategic move to boost the party’s chances in the state.
