Ahmed Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State, has resigned as Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter dated November 17, 2025, addressed to BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara, Makarfi cited concerns over zoning and the emergence of a new National Chairman from his geopolitical zone as the reasons for his decision.
Makarfi explained that he had first attempted to quit the role two months earlier, posting his resignation on the PDP BoT WhatsApp platform. He temporarily suspended that action after BoT leadership intervened; Wabara asked him to remain in office pending the conclusion of the PDP’s national convention. Ultimately, Makarfi reaffirmed his long‑held conviction that the positions of BoT Secretary and National Chairman should not be held by individuals from the same geopolitical zone, and this principle was the primary motivation behind his resignation.
The former governor’s departure comes at a time of significant change within the PDP, which has recently elected a new National Chairman. His resignation is likely to affect the party’s leadership structure and zoning arrangements, and, as a key figure in the PDP, it may have broader implications for internal dynamics and preparations for future elections. The PDP, one of Nigeria’s main opposition parties, is closely watched by political observers and analysts. Makarfi’s resignation has been formally submitted, and the party is expected to announce a replacement for the BoT Secretary in due course. Party leadership will need to manage the implications of his decision and ensure a smooth transition in its leadership structure.
