PDP Crisis: Turaki Faction Takes Over Party Headquarters

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria is embroiled in a deepening crisis, with a faction led by Taminu Turaki claiming to have taken over the party’s national secretariat. Turaki, the faction’s national chairman, made this declaration after forcing his way into the party’s National Executive Committee meeting hall on Tuesday, accompanied by Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi.

The development follows attempts by two rival factions to hold parallel meetings at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, leading to tension and chaos. The National Working Committee (NWC) elected in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, and the faction backed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike had both scheduled meetings for Tuesday. However, members of the Turaki faction were initially blocked from entering the party headquarters, prompting a confrontation.

Turaki emphasized the importance of democracy and the need for Nigerians to stand up against threats to the country’s democratic system. He stated that his faction is committed to ensuring the survival of democracy, even if it requires appealing to the international community for assistance. The faction leader also accused their opponents of using tear gas to try to deter them, but vowed that this would not stop them from taking control of the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza.

The crisis within the PDP has significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly with the country’s general elections approaching. The party’s internal divisions and power struggles may impact its ability to present a united front and effectively challenge other political parties. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the PDP will resolve its internal conflicts and move forward. For now, the Turaki faction appears determined to assert its control over the party’s national secretariat and shape its direction.
