Meta creates tool to prevent Reels content theft

Meta has introduced a new content protection tool for Facebook Reels creators to combat copycat content. Announced on Monday, the feature allows creators to safeguard their reels from being reposted without permission, reflecting Meta’s ongoing commitment to authenticity and support for original creators.

The tool is currently available to participants in the Facebook Content Monetization program who meet specific integrity and originality standards. Eligible users can access it through the Professional dashboard in the Facebook app, with eligibility checks possible via their Feed, Professional dashboard, or profile.

Once enrolled, the tool uses matching technology to scan for duplicate content. If a match is found, the creator receives a notification and can choose to track, block, or release the content. Tracking lets creators monitor the performance of the matching reel while keeping it visible, and they can add attribution links that display an “original by” label linking back to their Page or Profile. Blocking makes the matching content invisible without penalizing the other account. Creators may also release their claim or grant permission to specific accounts by adding them to an “allow list,” preventing future flagging.

This development is part of Meta’s broader strategy to address copycat creators. In July, the company reported removing 10 million profiles impersonating other creators and taking action against 500 000 accounts engaged in spammy behavior. By launching the content protection tool, Meta aims to empower original creators and maintain platform integrity.

The feature underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property and promoting authenticity in the digital landscape. As social media platforms evolve, further initiatives to support creators and combat copyright infringement are likely. For now, the content protection tool represents a significant step forward in Meta’s efforts to foster a more authentic and creative community on Facebook.
